Comprehensive Physical Damage

Comprehensive physical damage coverage compensates for damage to the policy holder’s automobile. Damages can include, but are not limited to, after effects of fire, flood, vandalism, or striking an animal. Comprehensive physical damage also covers theft of the vehicle and items within it. Most financial institutions require such coverage to qualify for a loan. Deductible amounts usually include a variety of levels.

Collision

Collision compensates the policy holder for vehicle repairs due to damage resulting from an accident. Like comprehensive coverage, most financial institutions require collision coverage to qualify for a vehicle loan. In Pennsylvania, the law requires a $500 deductible. Policy holders can get a lower amount, but higher deductibles usually result in lower monthly premiums.

Property Damage and Bodily Injury Liability

In an accident for which the policy holder is at fault, property damage liability compensates payment to another driver’s property. The minimum coverage limit in Pennsylvania is $5,000.  Bodily injury liability prevents the policy holder from paying for others’ injuries resulting from such accidents. In Pennsylvania, the minimum limit is $15,000 for injuries to one person. The maximum total is $30,000 for one accident. Some companies combine their limits to $35,000 as coverage for both bodily injury liability and property damage liability minimum requirements.

Uninsured Motorist

Bodily injury expenses resulting from an accident by an at-fault, uninsured motorist get compensated by uninsured motorist coverage. This coverage not only applies to the policy holder, but to family members and other passengers involved in the accident. Uninsured motorist coverage does not pay for cover expenses resulting in property damage. The Pennsylvania minimum coverage is $30,000 per accident or $15,000 per person.

Medical Payments/Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Medical Payments (MedPay) and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) not the same thing, but are similar. MedPay specifically covers medical bills. Many times, PIP also pays for medical costs, as well as funeral costs, lost income, and any potential death benefits. Both MedPay and PIP cover anyone occupying the insured vehicle at the time of the accident, including the policy holder. In Pennsylvania, PIP is mandatory.

Rental Reimbursement

Though not required, rental reimbursement is an often-preferred coverage selection. This coverage pays for rental vehicle fees after an accident. Usually, this coverage gets implemented while the policy holder’s automobile is undergoing repairs or in the process of being replaced. Usually, rental reimbursements max out at daily limits. They also cannot exceed a certain number of days.
