An Explanation of the Coverages Offered in Our Car Insurance Policies

Some of the coverages we provide differ, but they always meet state minimum standards.
Bodily Injury Liability
Bodily injury liability coverage protects the policy holder financially. It prevents the policy holder from directly paying for others’ injuries that result from an accident involving the insured vehicle. The minimum limit in Pennsylvania is $15,000 for injuries to one person and $30,000 total for one accident.
Property Damage Liability
Property damage liability covers another driver’s property in an accident for which the policy holder is at fault. In Pennsylvania, the minimum limit is $5,000. Sometimes, insurance companies offer a combined limit of $35,000 to cover both bodily injury liability and property damage liability minimum requirements.
Medical Payments/Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Medical Payments (MedPay) and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) are similar, but not the same thing. MedPay strictly covers medical bills. Often, PIP includes paying for medical costs, as well, but also funeral costs, lost income, and any potential death benefits. Both cover the policyholder and any person occupying the insured vehicle at the time of the accident. PIP is required in Pennsylvania.
Collision
Collision pays to repair damage to the policy holder’s vehicle that results from an accident. Most financial institutions require policy holders to buy this coverage to qualify for a vehicle loan. Pennsylvania law requires insurance companies apply a $500 collision deductible to the policy. Policy holders can request a lower amount; however, the higher the deductible, the lower the monthly premium.
Comprehensive Physical Damage
Comprehensive physical damage pays for damage to the policy holder’s vehicle from hazards including fire, flood, vandalism, or striking an animal. It also covers theft. Again, the majority of financial institutions require this coverage for loan qualification. Deductible amounts purchased often have various levels.
Uninsured Motorists
Uninsured motorist coverage pays for bodily injury expenses from an accident by an at-fault, uninsured motorist. The coverage applies to the policy holder, the policy holder’s family members, and other passengers involved in the accident. This coverage does not pay for damage to property. The minimum coverage in Pennsylvania is $15,000 per person or $30,000 per accident.
Rental Reimbursement
Rental reimbursement is not required, but an often-preferred coverage option. It pays for the cost of a rental vehicle while the policy holder’s is being repaired or replaced. Often, rental reimbursement has a daily limit and usually cannot exceed a certain number of days.
